Motivation. -“The general desire or willingness of someone to do something”
It is something we learn. It is something essential as we embark on our journey of fulfilling our goals and dreams of what we envision our life to be.
There may be a misconception of what really motivates us. Before moving forward in my journey I wanted to be sure that I was properly informed of what “really” motivates me to achieve the best I possibly can and reach within myself to harness this powerful energy.
What I learned instantly from listening to this audio cd set was the reference of Motivation 3.0.
There are three components as the author Daniel H.Pink describes to having true motivation in our lives.
1. Autonomy- Having control, governance, independence over;
- task – what they do
- time – when they do it
- team – who they do it with
- technique – how they do it
2. Mastery (flow)
- This is described as a mindset that allows you to see your abilities
- It involves learning, effort, grit and practice to achieve
3. Purpose
- Seeking purpose greater than themselves
- Profit maximization = Purpose maximization
Two types of motivational behavior are explained which are differentiated between an emphasis on extrinsic rewards vs intrinsic rewards.
Type I behavior- A motivational behavior that is made, not born. It leads to stronger performance, greater health, higher well being, and a welcoming satisfaction in the “act” of achieving as a character trait itself.
Type X behavior- A motivational behavior influenced more by extrinsic rewards (money) in order to perform the activity.
The takeaway from the two behaviors is that we are most productive when we enjoy what we are doing more importantly than how much money is being rewarded for what we are doing.
The main point I learned about motivation as it relates to doing things we love and living a fulfilling life is that profit is a byproduct of purpose.
He also introduced the suggestion of the “20% time theory.” Devoting your time to ideas you are passionate about, solving a problem. This will lead to greater satisfaction in life and ensuring we are doing things that utilize autonomy, mastery and purpose.
Giving yourself a performance review
- Figure out your performance/learning goals
- Every month give yourself an appraisal- how are you doing? where are you falling short?
- Set both smaller and larger goals, that way when you give yourself a review you have already accomplished some tasks
- Understand how every aspect of your works relates to your larger purpose
A few very important questions to ask yourself to ensure what you are doing in your life has a great significance and meaning to you.
Functioning in life with a purpose
- Do you know why you are doing what you are doing?
- What is your purpose?
