Part 2: Setting Our Goals
I would like to expand on the phrase I used in Defining Our Goals:
It focuses our energy on the defined details eliminating any peripheral distractions.
The meaning of this sentence is not to close off attention to others, helping others or solely be consumed by our own details. The meaning is referring to subconsciously visualizing the details of the goal that you have established to achieve. This will give attentive focus on those specific details of the goal which will bring an awareness of important opportunities and tasks bringing you closer to accomplishment.
Before we start setting our goals we need to ensure they are congruent with our values. They must be highly motivating to us.
An example in my life at the moment is I have recently enrolled in a speed reading course. My current reading speed is approximately 300 words per minute which is around average to below average reading speed. I would drastically like to improve this reading speed to 800 words per minute. This accomplishment would allow me to read and retain information at an above average speed accelerating my knowledge of what I would like to learn while creating greater time efficiency in my life. I view this as a short term goal which will greatly benefit me in the long term contributing to my end purpose, whatever that will be. (still in process of discovering)
We can ask ourselves, “What is the end purpose for wanting to accomplish this goal?” What purpose are you working towards?
Setting measurable accountability is also very important. Defining a date in which we would like to accomplish the goal we have defined will set a rough deadline for us to be accountable to work towards.
Note: Pushing ourselves is what builds a very important character trait- Resiliency
The ability to overcome challenges, become stronger and wiser because of difficulties presented before us. However, goal achievement should not be mentally and physically disabling. It should be enjoyable. There may be some stress or discomfort as we are taken out of our comfort zone. It is something we are working towards to create a life we envision. This may take time but knowing it will be worth the effort and planning when it is achieved keeps us motivated in a positive and enjoyable manner.
In my opinion, asking yourself if they are attainable is not the right question to ask yourself. Being honest with yourself and asking yourself, “Am I willing to put the required effort and sacrifice” towards accomplishing the goal is more realistic. This gives you a realistic starting point for planning and setting your goals. Keeping in mind the purpose you have chosen and the life balance required to operate in accordance to your values.
Many small goals lead to bigger goals. Focusing primarily on the BIG goal may seem overwhelming and may distract and demotivate the progress towards accomplishment. Setting too many goals at once will also be detrimental towards creating momentum of achievement.
Another point to be mentioned when setting a goal is to ensure it is defined in a positive way. Defining the “reason” why you want to attain the goal as opposed to “the result” of why you are pursuing the goal. A basic example that people can relate to: Focusing on the goal of losing weight is not motivating enough and may not fit in with our values. However, striving to be healthy in order to be active with family to create deeper connections and take control of your life while feeling great about yourself! This may be a much more motivating purpose as it is a reason of value to you and genuine purpose as opposed to simply focusing on the result, losing weight.
One very important point to practice when setting your goals is: Put In Writing!
Consistently write your goals everyday. This creates a mental image of what it is you are trying to accomplish making you aware of all opportunities and visualizing yourself achieving the goal.
Summarizing:
- Set goals that fit with your values. Ensure it is positive and defined.
- Make the goal measurable. Assess if it is realistic and within the time frame you want. Set an achievement date for accountability as a deadline to work towards.
- Plan steps to accomplish goal. Break down into small goals.
- Write your goals everyday.
- Visualize yourself achieving the Big goal.
- Take enjoyment in the process of accomplishing your goal.
This is a journey towards something we value that will ultimately contribute to our happiness in life. The opportunities for learning, growth and enjoyment are things we can be truly grateful for.
I continually wish you the best on your journey to happiness and a more fulfilling life.
