I learned something not long ago that has really changed how I live my life. It was the act of admitting to myself, “I am accountable.”
I learned this through the teachings of Brian Tracy, a well respected mentor in regards to personal development.
A weight felt like it was lifted, the dark cloud that would appear above my head in various situations of my life vanished. When I declared to myself that I am accountable, it helped me gain a sense of power, or control of my life.
I realized that we are ultimately in control of our lives. We dictate how we react to situations, and how we adapt to them as well. We have the ability to shape our lives in ways that may have not been realized.
When personal accountability was realized I began to take steps to monitor things that I was not taking accountability for in my life. Things such as my reactions to my children’s behaviour, career growth, personal growth, my time, family development, and life direction to name a few.
As we discuss goals and dreams, accountability contributes a very important aspect in accomplishing them. This is one area in my life that has been given a positive boost once I realized this crucial law.
I now believe that I create my own opportunities. Situations may not unfold as I may have envisioned, but how I react and adapt to them is what leads to the ultimate control of my life that I possess. I would not be able to achieve this without realizing that the only person who is responsible for me, is me. Accountability lies solely on my acceptance that I take responsibility for the actions and reactions in my life.
Personal growth was achieved because I no longer hold blame. It relinquished the need to find a fault with why something did not succeed or get accomplished. I take a moment to learn from the experience and apply the new found growth to succeed or accomplishment for the next opportunity.
“All blame is a waste of time. No matter how much fault you find with another, and regardless of how much you blame him, it will not change you.” – Wayne Dyer
Taking accountability invokes action. It clears a path, eliminating other distractions that can be used to reduce or halt a planned momentum towards what it is that you wish to change or achieve.
There are always obstacles challenges that we face in life.
Confronting these challenges with the acceptance of accountability for ourselves gives us a much greater opportunity to achieve and succeed throughout each day in life.
